RJ’s Report – March

As March weather comes in like a lion and out like a lamb, so too can our RIM efforts! We strive to guide our organizations towards legal compliance and risk mitigation by driving records and information management programs. Whether developing projects to implement a new RIM policy, or electronic records management system, or maintaining services in support of well-established practices, we need to keep moving forward, adding new tools for each new day.

Thank you to our February speaker Michael Elkins for his presentation on business process analysis and how to utilize it for RIM. My biggest takeaway from the session was not to get “mired in the perfect”. Continuous improvement is to be expected and allows your project to progress without fear of “scope creep” to include all the wants that seem to just get bigger and more numerous. Process improvement also provides a framework for adapting with the organization and its people grow. I’ve frequently looked to business analysis strategies in my RIM career as a means of understanding my users better. If I can better understand what their day-in and day-out work is, then I can recognize how and where records are created, and where a specific process may be inserted or improved upon, capturing records more consistently. Once records management is embedded as a regular task, better compliance will follow.

Please join us for our March meeting on Email Management in the Real World with our very own Brian Starck. Email is a beast of burden we all have to deal with and this session will present a case study where you will hear about different tactics and tools you can use in your own email management project.

Plus, be sure to check out the updated schedule with session descriptions and speakers for our highly anticipated 2017 Spring Seminar! We are excited to welcome the newly elected ARMA International President-Elect Ryan Zilm and Information Coalition co-founder Nick Inglis, who will both be giving keynote sessions. Register today and we’ll see you in April!
