Metadata in Court: What RIM, Legal and IT Need to Know

John J. Isaza

Session Overview: In this session, Mr. Isaza will provide attendees with a preview of the results of his research for an upcoming study he has been commissioned to write for the ARMA Educational Foundation. Mr. Isaza has been researching court trends towards preservation, capture and production of metadata (defined as data about data) in court. Speaking with a bent towards records management, Mr. Isaza will present metadata preservation guidelines gleaned from court decisions for electronically stored records such as email, website content, text messages, stored records and data, animation, digital photos, voice mail, social networking, music uploads, and even public records held by government entities. Based on his speaking style, you know that he will turn this potentially dry subject into a lively and entertaining discussion.

Presenter Biography: John Isaza, Esq. is a California-based attorney and partner of Howett Isaza Law Group, LLP, an international records and information management (RIM) consulting practice and law firm. Mr. Isaza is widely recognized as one of the country’s foremost experts on electronic discovery, the revised Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and other RIM issues. Mr. Isaza has developed information management and records retention programs for some of the most highly regulated Fortune 100 companies, including related regulatory research opinions.

Prior to forming a RIM practice, Mr. Isaza served as in-house General Counsel to a publicly traded medical device manufacturer. Mr. Isaza also has over a decade of experience as a trial lawyer specializing in business, environmental contamination, products liability and construction defects. During that time he served as Arbitrator for the Los Angeles Superior Court System. Mr. Isaza attended Boston College Law School, where he served as Editor of the International Law Review.

At present, he is an active speaker in the ARMA, AIIM, ABA and IT compliance circuits. Mr. Isaza chaired the Chicago Program Committee for ARMA’s 2005 international conference; he is a member of ARMA’s Electronic Discovery Advisory Group; he is past President of the Greater Los Angeles ARMA Chapter; and, he is serving on the Board of Directors of ARMA International. Recently, Mr. Isaza co-authored a book entitled 7 Steps for Legal Holds of ESI & Other Documents released in July 2009. Mr. Isaza is the 2008 recipient of ARMA’s prestigious Britt Literary Award.

Registrations must be received by 10 am on the Friday before the meeting. Please note that you can use a credit card to pay for meetings only when you register online. We cannot take credit cards at the door for a meeting - we only accept cash or checks.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations must be received no later than 10 am the Friday before the meeting. Registration fees will not be refunded for cancellations received after this time/date. No shows will be charged the full registration amount.

Walk-in Policy: A $10 surcharge will be added to the meeting fee for all walk-ins.
